Everest Region – Gokyo Lakes

September – November, March – April

The Gokyo Lake  region is one of the beautiful treats of the Khumbu.  The journey here leads you off the main path to Everest Base Camp, and thus it is less crowded.  The Gokyo Lakes are considered sacred by both Buddhist and Hindus drawing locals into the mountains, usually in August for th Janai Purnima festival where they bath in the sacred waters.  The lakes are fed from the Renjo-la pass to the northeast, and the Ngozumpa glacier in the east.  The Nogzumpa glacier is the largest in Nepal and possibly in the Himalayas.   It reveals some of the most stunning lakes in the region with a day hike up a trekking peak, Gokyo Ri (5,357 m, 17,575 ft) nearby to soak in the wide expanse of mountains with views of the worlds highest peaks including Everest, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga, Cho Oyu, and Makalu, which are all over 8000M.

If one is short on vacation time, trekking just to the Gokyo lakes and returning and can a great way to have an amazing adventure in the Himalayas in less time.  If more time is available there are many options available to you.  A great option is to start lower in Jiri and hike into the Khumbu instead of flying into Lukla.  The lower trek in lush and so full of culture, animals, and the sweetest people you have ever met.  This adds a week to the trek, but it is well worth the experience.  See the other treks we have listed like the trek over the Renjo la pass that continues over the Cho La pass as well.   And if one is really adventurous it is nice to continue west into the Rawaling valley and make a loop that way where comparatively few tourist have ventured.
